Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training Report
Focus: Side Control Positions and Escapes
Techniques Covered:
- Side Control Positions:
- We worked on three different side control positions, emphasizing control and transitioning between them.
- Traditional Side Control: Focused on maintaining chest-to-chest pressure, securing head and arm control.
- Modified Side Control (Kesa Gatame): Used an underhook or headlock grip with a focus on pinning the opponent’s shoulders.
- Reverse Side Control: Positioned facing the legs, creating opportunities for transitioning to mount/back.
- Escaping Side Control:
- Elbow Escape: Practiced using the elbow escape to create space and regain guard or half guard. Key points included:
- Positioning the inside elbow between your body and the opponent's hips.
- Using hip movement to create space.
- Shrimping (hip escape) to recover guard or half guard.
Key Points:
- Control: Ensuring pressure is maintained in each position while avoiding over-committing weight.
- Escapes: The focus was on using the elbow escape effectively by timing it during transitions or when the opponent adjusts their weight.
- Situational Sparring: Drilled side control escapes under live resistance, focusing on staying calm under pressure.
Notes for Improvement:
- Continue drilling the elbow escape for fluidity.
- Practice transitioning between different side control positions to improve fluid control over the opponent.
Next Steps:
- Focus on improving defence against side control submissions.
- Work on alternative escapes from different side control variants.
This report summarizes the technical aspects of today's session and highlights areas for further improvement.
